SENIOR ENERGY DATA ANALYST

Opinion Dynamics seeks a Senior Energy Data Analyst to work with our energy research and consulting team in Waltham, MA. We’re looking for a highly proactive, energetic professional who will thrive in preparing for, and delivering, cutting-edge energy behavior, usage and savings analysis to our clients.

The Senior Energy Data Analyst will work with Opinion Dynamics’ current electric and gas utility clients throughout the country. This position offers many opportunities to apply statistical and engineering-based approaches to answer client questions about customer decision-making, energy consumption, program impact, and savings opportunities. Our work includes evaluative and predictive modeling of energy efficiency behaviors and programs, such as commercial and residential efficiency programs, demand side management programs, and educational/behavioral programs.

Responsibilities


Key Data Management Responsibilities

The insights we develop for clients are based on integrating extensive primary research, actual energy use, and engineering knowledge. As such, this position is a blend of data management and analysis. Data management responsibilities include:

  • Integrate large datasets of energy usage data, primary research, customer information and billing data – including validating multiple data sources that may gave conflicting information
  • Consult with energy research and engineering staff to understand data processes that need to be established and automated to meet multiple analysis needs
  • Establish and maintain energy, customer and primary research data management processes
  • Identify and execute QA/QC processes as needed (including training or delegating other staff to help with QA/QC)

Key Analysis Responsibilities

The Senior Energy Data Analyst will apply data mining and statistical analysis expertise to sophisticated energy data analysis. Analysis responsibilities include:

  • Develop in-depth understanding of energy data in context of customer and site characteristics, through collaboration with engineering team and energy research team
  • Design or implement models that help identify baseline consumption, savings or savings potential (leveraging primary research, actual energy data, engineering-based savings assumptions, regression or other data mining and modeling techniques)
  • Conduct energy usage & savings analysis of building and facility systems using appropriate analytical tools
  • Extrapolate within-sample findings to broader participant or customer population
  • Prepare written reports clearly describing data cleaning & analysis methods and results
  • Develop analytical methodologies based on feedback from internal and external stakeholders and industry best practices

 

Qualifications


Required Qualifications

Candidates must possess strong analytical skills, customer service, written and verbal communication and the ability to continually and effectively manage multiple concurrent priorities. Candidates will also possess:

  • BA/BS degree in Engineering, Economics, Statistics, Computer Science, Operations Research, or another analytical field
  • Professional experience in either (a) market research, including primary data collection and analysis, or (b) energy efficiency, environmental consulting, engineering or building energy use
  • Tireless attention to detail
  • An inquisitive approach to data management and analysis
  • Demonstrated experience managing, cleaning, and preparing large datasets
  • Expertise in writing syntax for Stata (R, SAS and SPSS expertise also considered; Stata preferable)
  • Strong written and verbal communication stills
  • Ability to continually and effectively manage concurrent priorities

Desired Qualifications

Ideally, candidates will also possess:

  • Master’s degree
  • Experience with some or all of the following tasks: Energy modeling, monitoring and verification, data logging, analysis of electrical meter data, building systems simulation/modeling
  • Demonstrated skills in statistical testing and regression-based analysis
  • Knowledge and experience with cross-disciplinary or non-traditional data mining techniques

Beyond these qualifications, we’re looking for someone with the desire to keeping learning about energy efficiency and gain expertise in the evaluation field.
