Great Influencers in Energy: Thomas Edison may not have invented the light bulb; but where would it (or we) be without him.
Thomas Edison’s invention of the first commercially viable incandescent light bulb in 1880 changed the world forever. However, Edison’s invention was not without its predecessors, as there were already twenty-three different iterations of the light bulb before his. This was just the beginning of Edison’s contributions to lighting technology, as he went on to develop a host of inventions that would make the use of light bulbs practical. From the opening of the first commercial power station in the U.S. to the creation of an electrochemical meter that could measure electricity flow over time, Edison’s work helped launch the beginnings of New York’s electrical grid. Edison’s legacy lives on today, as lighting technology continues to evolve with advancements in energy efficiency, performance, and design.
